On January 25, 140 years since the establishment of the Bulgarian National Bank in 1879 by the Russian imperial commissioner in Bulgaria, Prince Alexander Dondukov-Korsakov, is celebrated. On 6 June that same year the first bank operation took place.

The BNB is one of the oldest central banks in the world - 13th in a row, and one of the first public institutions in Bulgaria after the Liberation. Its creation precedes even the convening of the Constituent Assembly that prepared and adopted the Bulgarian Constitution.
