An official ceremony in front of the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral downtown Sofia has given the start of a two-day official visit of Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, to Bulgaria.

Today, the guest is to hold meetings with Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and President Rumen Radev. The main topics of the visit’s agenda are be cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, investment, science and technology, culture and humanitarian relations.

This is the second visit of Medvedev to Bulgaria since 2008 when he was part of a delegation led by Russian President Vladimir Putin. In recent years, internal and external factors have hampered implementation of key joint projects in the energy sector, such as the Burgas - Alexandroupolus gas pipeline, the South Stream gas pipeline and the Belene NPP, but a new stage in their development has recently been observed. Bulgaria has restarted work on the Belene NPP project and the Russian Federation has announced it would build a branch of the Turkish Stream pipeline that would pass through Bulgaria.
