In 2020, Bulgaria ranks 43rd in the world in terms of social progress. The index measures the quality of life and social well-being of citizens in 163 countries. Three main groups of indicators are analyzed - basic needs, access to education and information, and personal freedoms. In the conditions of a coronavirus pandemic, the quality of life and social well-being fall for the first time in 10 years, BTA has reported.

Bulgaria is ahead of Romania, which ranks 45th, Serbia is 52nd and Turkey is 92nd. Croatia, which last joined the EU is 39th, and Greece is 27th. The Scandinavian countries have the best indicators, while Chad and South Sudan are on the opposite pole.
