Bulgarian archaeologists are continuing to study the ancient nymphaeum (sanctuary of the nymphs) discovered at the Aquae Calidae complex near Burgas. The nymphaeum occupies a central place in the former Roman baths and was part of a fountain with an inscription and a statue of the three nymphs - the protectors of the mineral springs, Assoc. Prof. Dimitar Momchilov, head of the research, for the BNR.

"We discovered the nymphaeum last year in the periphery, and now we have started to uncover it," he explained. Near the cult fountain, the archaeologists found a lot of ancient pottery and coins from the 1st and 2nd centuries BC. In the summer of 2022, they found an extraordinary inscription dedicated to the nymphs, dating from the late 1st or early 2nd century BC.

The archaeologists are also exploring a medieval layer from which five dwellings, part of a church and a necropolis have been identified over the last two years. The ruins date back to the 12th and 13th centuries and are attested by a large quantity of artistic pottery, coins and seals.

The archaeological research at Aquae Calidae has been funded by Burgas Municipality since 2008.
