Sofia Philharmonic and National Musical Theatre open new season on International Day of Music

БНР Новини

October 1 is the World Day of Poetry, the World Vegetarian Day, the International Day of Senior Citizens, the Day of the Bulgarian Insurance Workers... But perhaps the greatest range of fans is held by the World Music Day, which has been observed since 1974. The holiday was established by the International Music Council with UNESCO and coincides with the beginning of the new concert season. Some say that this art brings not only universally human but also cosmic messages. For some it is like the air they breathe, for others – it is an "immersion into nothingness." And the few people who have turned it into a way of life gladly serve this precious gift to the audience. Even on their professional holiday. Music in its various incarnations will sound today across Bulgaria in dozens of concert halls, small and large cultural centers.

The Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Philharmonic Choir open the season the new music season tonight with a concert from the series "Classical music in the cinema." Under the baton of the chief conductor of the orchestra Martin Panteleev works by Tchaikovsky, Borodin, and Mussorgsky will be performed. The program includes also an almost forgotten "Rhapsody" by Vesselin Stoyanov.

The audience will also hear Piano Concerto by Edvard Grieg. An interesting fact in the history of this work – this was the first piano concerto put on record. The year is 1909, the technology does not allow for the entire work to be recorded so it was limited to duration of six minutes. Of course, the audience in Bulgaria hall tonight will hear the concert just as it was created by the great Norwegian composer. The soloist is brilliant Bulgarian pianist Plamena Mangova.

"And again going to the Operetta” is the title of the concert which will be delivered by the artists from the National Music Theatre "Stefan Makedonski". Director of the show is singer Alexander Mutafchiyski who says more:

"Traditionally, the Music Theater raises its curtain and welcomes its friends and admirers on 1 October. This year we decided to open the season with the concert under the motto "And again going to the operetta". We will hear the most beloved arias and ensembles from our repertoire. We were entrusted with the task to select the program and to be a director - my debut in this talent. We wanted to make a brief flashback of last season, of that which we remembered the audience. Some of the performances are presented in a slightly different way. We like the musical as a genre, we decided to prepare a similar program with a repertoire of musicals. But we now again chose the operetta genre because it is a favorite genre of the Bulgarian audience and of us, the artists of the musical theater. We'll see on stage my colleagues Martcho Apostolov, Edelina Kaneva, Dobrina Ikonomova, Bogomil Spirov, Katerina Tuparova, Stanimira Vassileva and many others. Also involved are the entire ballet and orchestra. Conductor is Maestro Yuli Damyanov - chief conductor of the theater, the stage design is made by Evgenia Raeva. We will see the most popular moments of The Gypsy Princess, Countess Maritza, The Beautiful Helen, etc.”
