Young people and social networks’ hate, trolls and anti-elitism

“We should learn how to live in the digital world as well, as we’ve been there for a relatively short period, but this incredible spot of opportunities has its dark side too” – words of editor-in-chief of the Kultura Portal Tony Nikolov. He talked on anti-elite criticism, hate and online trolls during the Power of Words: Networks, Radicalization, Ridicule forum at the parliament’s building days ago. However, what is anti-elitism?

“This is the refusal to recognize any respected persons and political hierarchies. It is good that we have our doubts and ask questions. On the other hand the total denial of anything, the global anti-elite criticism is very dangerous. This phenomenon affects politicians, public persons, artists who are supposed to be respected due to their morality. There is a total lack of trust towards such people, based on “We know this guy’s background, he can’t teach us…”

Trolls are ugly and hairy creatures, living basically in caves, but as of recent time – online as well. It is the phenomenon of negative, cursing and hating users who try to push the public opinion against a person across forums and social networks. Trolls are paid haters. More from Tony Nikolov:

“I am concerned about the poles of hatred nowadays, as hate is easy online – it is cozy to be anonymous, with your real face hidden behind many profiles. Trolls are creatures of the new digital mythology and their IP addresses are their workplaces. They have caused many crises online due to incorrect information. Sometimes people tend to form groups, influenced by a certain accident and someone gives them skillful directions. This might result in mob law events, even in revolutions!”

Trolls are a part of the community of hatred. One can be very peaceful in the street, but a monstrous creature in front of the PC.

“Hating is a psychological phenomenon, as hate causes diseases to the one who feels it. This “bacteria” spreads like in an ocean and this is really dangerous for young people, as this ocean is quite accessible. It is not controlled due to the rules of democracy. It is like with forest mushrooms – we don’t know how to protect ourselves. Anyone can have a negative opinion, but haters decline everything. You can’t think that there must not be politics and elections.”

Excessive hate can result in a totally smashed self-confidence, depression and a refusal to create your own works, even more… Tony Nikolov says why the fight with Internet trolls is so tough:

“It is like the fight between freedom and censorship. If you remove a certain profile, a new one appears right away. It never ends – the digital world provides protection. There are many Nazi and racist websites, fierce propaganda, incitement against certain people etc. One should be careful, as this looks like a house with no doors and windows.”

Nikolov agreed with the stance of Safenet.bg that anyone should start taking care of his or her own safety by being careful with the photos and texts published online.
