NGOs in Bulgaria said they are to protest if the Ministry of Agriculture did not withdraw amendments to the Food Act that envisage great reduction of fines for genetically modified organisms in food. So far, the fine is about 18 thousand euros and the changes envisage the fine to become 3,000 euros. The current obligation to indicate products containing GMOs on 25 percent of the package will be also dropped. "This way importers of such products will count on low control and if caught they would pay low penalties," Borislav Sandov of the "The Greens" party says.
