Architects call for criminalizing encroachment on monuments of culture

The Chamber of Architects in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv have called for urgent legislative changes that are to criminalize encroachment on cultural monuments. Architects also call that in cases of demolishing or arson, the state should confiscate the properties. The initiative was launched after a major fire erupted on August 20 in the buildings of the emblematic for Plovdiv “Tobacco Town.” This is yet another harsh blow to the historical complex after an attempt for demolishing it in March 2016 failed as citizens stood in front of bulldozers to prevent complete destruction. The Tobacco Town, built in the early 20s of the 20th century is a monument of culture. There are suspicions that the fire was caused deliberately, because of the highly-attractive location of the buildings.
