In connection with reports in the media on Saturday that the nomination of Irina Bokova to lead the United Nations could be replaced with EU Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva, Deputy PM Rumiana Bachvarova said today that there was information about government plans to discuss a replacement. Bachvarova however remarked that so far the Bulgarian nominee had not been very convincing and a good final outcome was unlikely. A day earlier the Spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova denied media reports that German Chancellor Angela Merkel had persuaded Russian President Vladimir Putin to switch support to Kristalina Georgieva as Bulgaria’s nomination. She however added that during the recent G-20 countries summit in Hangzhou, China, the Russian side had been explicit telling the German chancellor that the nomination for a UN secretary general by a country was a sovereign and independent decision of the country in question and that any direct or indirect attempts to influence such a decision were unacceptable.
