The festival The Yellow Paving Stones will remain faithful to the spirit of jazz and world music. Just to remind you that the yellow paving stones are characteristic of Sofia's central part and are the synonym of the city's historical center. This year's third edition of the event represents a dialogue in which diverse traditions are involved. Musicians on the festival's playbill come from USA, Greece, Crimea, Turkmenistan, Macedonia and Georgia. The internationally-acclaimed Stoyan Yankulov (percussions) and Theodosii Spassov (kaval) will convey to audiences part of the magic of Bulgarian folklore. The concerts from The Yellow Paving Stones are due on 7 and 8 October at the Theater of the Bulgarian Army in Sofia.
Popular Bulgarian musician Theodosii Spassov is the artistic director of The Yellow Paving Stones festival, and its manager is Ivan Minchev who gives some details:
“This year the festival features the guitar and instruments derived from it. The Sofia paving stones are going to vibrate in tune with the strings of extraordinary guitarists such as Vlatko Stefanovski from Macedonia, and Enver Izmaylov from Crimea who will play a specific type of guitar with a unique sound. Haig Yazdzhiyan from Greece will show to us one of the archetypes of the guitar, the ancient oud. On each night two bands will be presented. The trios of Haig Yazdzhiyan and Enver Izmaylov will appear on the first one. The second night opens with the impressive Georgian band The Shin which will for the first time appear in Bulgaria, and will be followed by Theodosii Spassov, Vlatko Stefanovski and Mino Cinelu. Mino Cinelu from USA is an exceptional multi-instrumentalist who has worked with Miles Davis, the Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder and Sting.
Recently Mino Cinelu and Theodosii Spassov teamed up for a joint project.
Following the concerts jam sessions will be held at Maxim Night Club. The Lubomir Tsanev trio is the host on 7 October. The famous pianist will probably play some of the pieces included in his debut album expected to be released at the end of the year. Other appearances include Borislav Yasenov quartet. A flutist, composer and pedagogue, Yasenov has released three albums with original jazz music.
