Bilateral economic cooperation, the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the visa regime between Bulgaria and Canada – these were the talking points during a meeting between Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov and the newly appointed Canadian ambassador to Bulgaria, with residence in Bucharest Kevin Hamilton.

“Bulgaria acknowledges the role of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement in this direction, but above all we expect steadfast guarantees on the question of visa liberalization for Bulgarian citizens so they can avail themselves fully of the potential of the agreements reached,” Minister Mitov said. He welcomed the willingness declared by the Canadian government to abolish visas for Bulgarian nationals in 2017 but laid emphasis on the need to specify the parameters and validate this position in suitable form before the signing of CETA. On his part the Canadian ambassador expressed readiness to coordinate the two countries’ joint efforts in this sphere.
