National Security Council without plan for solving political crisis

In Sofia a meeting of the Consultative Council on National Security to the President of the Republic has taken place, but a plan for resolving the political crisis has not been mapped out and early parliamentary elections have become the most expected solution.

Outgoing Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has once again declared that he would not head a new cabinet in this parliament. BSP leader Kornelia Ninova also said that her party will not form a new government within the current National Assembly. The Patriotic Front, the Reformist Bloc and the Bulgarian Democratic Centre have supported calls for forming experts’ cabinet. President Plevneliev announced that after GERB and BSP refused to officially form a government, he would need to decide which third political force could be offered a mandate.

If the third attempt failed, the president is entitled to appoint a caretaker government. In the last three months of his term in office, however, the president cannot dissolve the parliament and it would continue work until January 22, 2017 when the newly elected head of state Rumen Radev will step into office and will acquire competencies to dissolve parliament and set a date for early elections.
