The Bulgarian Orthodox Church marks today Cheesefare Sunday (Forgiveness Sunday). Cheesefare Sunday is celebrated on the seventh Sunday before Orthodox Easter. On this day Orthodox Christians ask forgiveness from elder family members for their offences and hope to invite God’s forgiveness and to begin Lent with a spirit of humility. Chessefare Sunday is the last day before the start of the Great Lent. On this day Orthodox Christians eat cheese, milk and other dairy food for the last time before the Great Lent. Forgiveness Sunday marks the end of the Cheese Week, when meat products are forbidden. For the next seven weeks strictly observant Orthodox Christians will not consume any eggs, dairy products, meat, fish or alcohol. On Forgiveness Sunday all eparchies with the Bulgarian Orthodox Church serve solemn morning and evening liturgies.
