Today the Bulgarian Orthodox church honours the memory of the prophet Elijah (Ilyia) – a herald of the true faith in the one true God, a feast day Bulgarians hold in the highest esteem.
The day of St. Elijah, 20 July, coincides with the anniversary of the Ilinden-Preobrazhenia uprising, the highest point in the national liberation struggles of Macedonian and Thracian Bulgarians.
