The start of the construction of a new repository for long-term storage of low and intermediate-level radioactive waste near the Kozloduy nuclear power plant will be given today (August 29). The first sod will be turned at an official ceremony in the presence of ministers, MPs and representatives of the local authorities. The repository will function in the next 60 years. The first stage of the construction will cost nearly EUR 72 million. The money was granted gratuitously by the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund through the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The second and the third phase will cost less and the financing will be provided by the Kozloduy NPP.
