Analysis of Eurostat published on occasion of the World Teachers’ Day (October 5) shows that 93% of all Bulgarian teachers are people with university (Bachelor’s or Master’s) degree. 84% of the Bulgarian teachers are women and 48% of the teaching staff are aged 50 or above. Bulgaria ranks 3rd in the EU in terms of the level of feminization of the teaching staff after Latvia (87%) and Lithuania (85%). Bulgarian teachers are among Europe’s fastest ageing ones. Italy tops this ranking, where 57% of the teachers are 50 or above. According to data of the National Statistical institute, in 2015 there were 45,000 teachers in Bulgaria, 2014 schools and 600,000 pupils.
