Commemoration ceremony in Plovdiv for British soldiers who died in First World War

In the presence of Emma Hopkins, the British Ambassador to Bulgaria, a ceremony was held in the Central Cemetery in memory of 56 British soldiers buried there during the First World War. In front of their memorial plaques poppies were placed. This is related to an English belief that where bombs have fallen during the war, poppies later grow.

We appreciate Bulgarians who study and work in the UK and contribute to our economy. The aim is to give them the status of permanent residents after Brexit in March 2019. This is what the ambassador said after the ceremony and added that the agreement of the European Union over the issue was expected.

Hopkins added that after this act, a visa regime for the 27 EU countries, including Bulgaria, would probably not be introduced.
