Declining Turkish lira turns Edirne into attractive shopping spot for Bulgarians

Photo: library

During weekends thousands of Bulgarians from across the country head on a shopping trip to Edirne in neighboring Turkey. In the big shopping centers and markets of Edirne, Bulgarian speech is often heard. Menus in the nearby pubs are usually translated into Bulgarian and Greek. The explanation is simple and involves the Turkish lira rate, which for the past two years has lost 30 percent of its value against the dollar. According to data from the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry, quoted by Bulgarian diplomatic sources, Bulgarians spent a total of some 50,000 euros a day in Edirne, the BTA reported.
