The Bulgarian government has decided that Bulgaria would support Poland and appeal against the decision of the European Commission regarding the new emissions standards for coal-fired power plants, Bulgaria’s Minister of Energy Temenuzhka Petkova announced during the sitting of the Brach Council for Tripartite Cooperation on coal output, energy resources and mining construction. Bulgaria is among the countries which are seriously affected by the new standards related to the emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and mercury. If the operators of the coal power plants fail to meet the new requirements and conditions, they should either demand derogation proving that their environmental protection expenses would significantly exceed the environmental benefits, or stop functioning. Minister Petkova underlined that the position of the Bulgarian cabinet was clearly stated- this country voted against the document of the EU. A political consensus was reached in Bulgaria on this topic.
