The European Commission (EC) has decided to refer Bulgaria to the European Court of Justice over delaying turning the directive on the reduction of the costs of high-speed networks into national law. This country was supposed to do so until 2016. The EC has offered sanctions of 22,226.40 euros per day.
Brussels has also announced it starts a trial against Bulgaria over its Law on Marks and Geographical Indications adopted in 1999. According to the EC, Bulgaria should have put an end to this system as of the date of EU accession in 2007. The Commission considers that national protection of geographical indications is not compatible with European Union rules on quality schemes for agricultural products and food.
