Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the upcoming EU-Western Balkans summit in Sofia. The two spoke in Aachen after taking part in the international Charlemagne prize award ceremony.

Angela Merkel described Boyko Borissov’s actions aimed at the accession of the countries of the region to the EU as an unqualified success.

“The focus on the Western Balkans has not been an easy priority, but you, Boyko, handled it admirably and you must remain as mediator on this issue,” Chancellor Merkel said, as quoted by the press service of the Bulgarian prime minister.

Boyko Borissov stressed that Bulgaria will continue to actively make efforts so that the connectivity among the countries of the region may remain a priority during the next presidencies of the Council of the EU. During the meeting between the two Boyko Borissov raised the question of the controversial EC “mobility package” proposals which affect Bulgarian transport carriers. PM Borissov said he had raised the issue earlier in the day with French President Macron and that the two had agreed to discuss the matter in greater detail over the telephone. Angela Merkel expressed understanding for the concerns of the Bulgarian side and added that an acceptable solution must be found for all members of the EU
