“The Presidency of Bulgaria is a success. Nobody remembers names, but people do remember Bulgaria as a successful Presidency,” said PM Boyko Borissov at a press conference given by the Bulgarian prime minister, the President of the European Council Donald Tusk and the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker after the close of the EU-Western Balkans summit held in Sofia.

“It is now clear to everyone, that with the problems we have with the geostrategic players, the only salvation for the EU is to be unified. The strength of the EU lies in unity. I am happy that so many agreements were signed by the leaders of the Western Balkans,” Borissov said further.

After the end of the EU-Western Balkans summit in Sofia the leaders signed agreements on concrete projects. The energy ministers of Serbia and Bulgaria Temenuzhka Petkova and Aleksandar Antic signed an agreement on a Bulgaria-Serbia gas interconnector. Serbia also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the European Investment Bank. The leaders of the Western Balkans countries signed statements in support of the digital programme of the region.

“The EU is and will remain the most reliable partner to the entire Western Balkans,” said on his part Donald Tusk and added that the integration of the Western Balkans is a top priority for the EU and the Western Balkans are an integral part of Europe. Tusk thanked PM Borissov and his team.

A little earlier, Antonio Tajani, President of the European Parliament announced in Sofia that he had proposed a 10 billion euro package for infrastructure projects in the Western Balkans.
