It is important for us to realize that the increase of the defense capabilities of each country should be a recognized necessity rather than compulsion, Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev said after the emergency meeting of the NATO leaders held within the frameworks of the NATO Summit in Brussels. The US President Donald Trump demands that the NATO allies should increase their defense spending to 4% of their gross domestic product. However, the NATO members will discuss that proposal later on. Currently, the countries are debating when these expenses should reach 2% of their GDP, Rumen Radev went on to say. Bulgaria's head of state Radev met in Brussels with Turkey's President Recep Erdogan. Presidents Radev and Erdogan discussed the future extension of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline to Bulgaria. Turkey is an important neighbour, partner and ally of Bulgaria. We must not leave any outstanding issues unsolved, which is of great importance for our bilateral relations, President Radev said after the meeting with President Erdogan.
