The city of Burgas hosts a conference dedicated to the fight against sexual assault. According to data of Eurostat, ten women die every day in Europe as a result of domestic violence and 55% of the EU women were victims of aggression. In Bulgaria one in three women is a victim of domestic violence. The experience of the Sexual Assault Victim Support Center built in Burgas two years ago was presented at the forum. It provides support to victims of sexual assault in the first and most difficult moments after the traumatic accident. Bulgaria’s Vice President Iliana Yotova pointed out that many of the victims of domestic violence refuse to cooperate to the Police due to fear and shame. Vice President Yotova called for tougher penalties for the perpetrators of such crimes. Iliana Yotova also paid attention to another big topic-human trafficking and mainly trafficking in women and children.
