Poultry breeders staged a protest in front of the building of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) in Sofia over the vague measures taken by the agency’s administration to counter bird flu.

According to BFSA data, at this time there are 22 outbreaks of bird flu in Bulgaria. The agency’s director Damyan Iliev admitted that almost one million birds have been culled in Bulgaria since the beginning of the year because of avian flu, but that the disease has continued to spread nonetheless. He added that farmers from the poultry sector have received compensations of over 4 million Leva.
