The street lighting in Kapana quarter of Plovdiv will begin to flicker every time a baby is born in the city. The design for this unique effect is by Alberto Garutti from Italy and is part of the programme “Plovdiv, European capital of culture, 2019”.
Buttons have been installed at the maternity wards of the hospitals in Plovdiv which the staff will push every time a baby is delivered. As they do so, the street lights in Kapana will start to flicker slowly in the course of 30 seconds. The aim of the project by Alberto Garutti, entitled “To those born today” is to awaken the public’s empathy.
