Bulgarians breathing dangerously polluted air once again

Photo: BGNES

Today, Sofia and other major cities in the country have been engulfed by fog and equipment measured heavily polluted air. The reason is the inversion, because of which the fine particulates stay low in the atmosphere.

Yesterday, the concentration of particulate matter in some areas of the capital was 25 times above the limit. This morning, the concentration is about 20 times the limit. Traffic congestion is also contributing to pollution.

Civil organization Save Sofia has warned that exposure to similar levels of carcinogenic pollution significantly increases the risk of cancer, respiratory and cardiovascular disease, premature birth, birth defects, premature death, etc.
