Start of Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture, 2019 celebrations

From January 11 to 13 a series of in- and outdoor events will mark the launch of the Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture, 2019 project. The highlight will be a music, dance and light show tomorrow night, January 12.

The programme features more than 200 kukeri (mummers), kaval player Theodosii Spassov and folk singer Valya Balkanska, who rose to fame when a Bulgarian folk song performed by her was included in the Golden Record launched into space on board the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft.  

Popular French singer of Bulgarian descent Sylvie Vartan sent a video message congratulating Plovdiv.

Plovdiv is the first Bulgarian town to have been selected European Capital of Culture
