Prime Minister, Patriarch and Grand Mufti discuss debts of religious denominations

A meeting took place in Sofia between Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, the Patriarch of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church Neophyte and Grand Mufti Mustafa Hadzhi to discuss the planned amendments to the Religious Denominations Act, by force of which the debts of religious denominations will be waived off.

According to the Ministry of Finance, six religious denominations in Bulgaria have accumulated debts amounting to a total of 4.25 million Euro /8.27 million Leva/. 4.2 million Euro /8.2 million Leva / of this sum are debts owed by the Grand Mufti’s Office.

Mustafa Hadzhi commented that the debts of the Grand Mufti’s Office had been accumulated in the time since 2005, but refused any details. Patriarch Neophyte on his part pointed out that the issue should not be politicized, and described the discussion as useful to all people who expect the patriarch and the grand mufti to be on good terms.
