The first results of a European Social Survey in Bulgaria financed by the Ministry of Education and Science show discrepancy between religion, religiosity and religious faith among Bulgarians. 57% of the Orthodox Christians said they are religious and only 39% of them said they believe in God. In other words, religion is rather a matter of identity rather than religious faith, sociologists contend. One on four Bulgarians does not trust the church as an institution. In the past 20 years the structure of religious denominations in Bulgaria remained unchanged- there are 74% Orthodox Christians, 11% Muslims and 13% atheists in Bulgaria. The rest of the population belongs to other religions.
