Bulgarians prefer theatre to cinema

The number of Bulgarians attending theater performances has increased and the number of people going to the cinema decreased last year. In 2018 there were 69 cinemas and 226 cinema screens in this country. The number of film shows fell with 2.1% and the number of cinema visits dwindled by 11.3%. A total of 8,575 movies were shown on cinema screens last year. 1,077 of them were Bulgarian, 2,359 were European, 4,463 were produced in the USA and 676 were produced in other countries. Meanwhile, a total of 15,155 theatre performances were held in Bulgaria last year. They were attended by 2,389,000 people. The number of Bulgarians attending a theatre performance increased from 145 to 158 on average. Last year 83 radio stations broadcasted progammes in the course of 727,000 broadcast hours, which was 0.5% increase as compared to the previous year. Music shows formed 52.5% of the total broadcast hours and news formed 11.8% of the total radio broadcast. A total of 116 TV channels broadcasted 742,800 hours of TV programme (166.200 hours of movie broadcast, 92.200 hours of music broadcast, 72.100 hours of news and political journalism, 57.600 hours advertisements and 12,000 hours educational programmes.
