Bulgaria will develop cave tourism in the Rhodopes and protect bats in the Bulgaria-Greece border region with EU funds. The EU financing is to the tune of over EUR 1.8 million under the 2014-2020 INTERREG Bulgaria-Greece Cooperation Programme. The Bulgarian authorities will use some of the money to improve access to Sharenka Cave near the town of Madan. The wax figures of ancient Thracian miners are among the attractions of this cave. A map with the bat habitats along the Mesta River and map of caves near Momchilgrad and Komotini in the Bulgaria-Greece cross border area will be made.
