Today the Bulgarian Orthodox Church celebrates the great Christian holiday of the Annunciation of the Lord. According to the Bible, on this day, Archangel Gabriel announced to the Blessed Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus, the Savior of humankind and the Son of God.

In Bulgaria, the Annunciation is also associated with the coming of spring, so on this day leafy green plants like spinach are traditionally served at the table. It is also a tradition to have fish at the table. Bread is also baked as honey is spread on it and the bread is distributed to neighbors and loved ones. According to folk beliefs on this day all wounds heal more easily and quickly.
