Bulgaria has the longest time frame in the EU for checking legality of property

Bulgaria has the longest time limit in the EU in which the legality of property acquisition can be checked – up to 10 years - before charges are brought against the owner. In most countries it is half as long.

This is indicated in a European Commission report on the implementation of European legislation in the countries members with regard to illegal assets forfeiture. The report also indicates that Bulgaria is among the countries in which assets are forfeited if there is criminal intent, whereas in most countries of the EU confiscation is applied for all crime.
