On 7 June 30 years ago, one million people gathered at an election rally on Eagles' Bridge in Sofia.

They filled the space around the bridge and much of what was then Lenin Boulevard, now Tsarogradsko Shose, the streets nearby, Borisova Gradina park, the balconies and rooftops of buildings in the vicinity. The rally was called by the Union of Democratic Forces, SDS. It was the last election rally of the SDS – the political party set up six months previously by a coalition of parties, associations and organizations. A leading figure at the event, which lasted more than 5 hours, was the first democratically elected president of Bulgaria, the late Dr. Zhelyu Zhelev.
