Life expectancy in Bulgaria has been steadily rising since 1980, but remains the lowest in the EU, according to the European Commission. Spain reports the highest life expectancy - 83.5 years. In Bulgaria, people live averagely up to 75 years of age. In 1980, the rate was 71.1 years, 68.4 for men and 73.9 for women, respectively. Between 2000 and 2018, life expectancy in Bulgaria rose by 3.1 years. While in most EU countries population in agricultural areas is gradually increasing, in Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Croatia, Hungary and Portugal it is decreasing and moving to cities.
