The people of the town of Velingrad, southern Bulgaria, known for its healing mineral water, have sent a note to all state institutions demanding the cessation of the concession for the mining of tungsten in the region, granted to a company from Plovdiv.

Part of the future mine will be in close proximity to the town‘s water catchment area. The ore mining will affect another 15 towns and villages in the area as well. A petition, supported by 11,000 people from Velingrad points out that the mine will inflict permanent damage on nature and will impair quality of life, BNR-Pazardzhik reports.
