Bulgaria supports a comprehensive review of the European Union's relations with Belarus, but change in the country must come from its citizens, not from outside. This was said by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov during the extraordinary meeting of the European Council, which was held via video conference.
According to him, the introduction of sanctions against Belarus should be aimed at those responsible for undemocratic approaches, and not at the citizens who are going through many difficulties in this period of crisis. Borissov stressed that the use of violence against peaceful protesters was unacceptable, the government's press service reports.
"We continue to monitor with concern the situation in Belarus after the presidential elections held on August 9," Borissov added.
