The Union of  Judges in Bulgaria has asked the Supreme Judicial Council to check whether there exist grounds for the early dismissal of Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev.

The Union is demanding a thorough investigation into whether Ivan Geshev has violated the principle of political neutrality in his public statements. The judges are also asking for an assessment whether the prestige of the judiciary has been undermined by the prosecution’s transformation into a political power centre, independent of the democratic procedures of accountability. The judges cite as an example the recordings, made using special investigative means, which  have been made public, and the breach of the presumption of innocence by making public the names of people whom Ivan Geshev considers to have committed a crime.
