Parliament approves new regime for minor asylum seekers

Photo: BGNES-archive

Following a recommendation of the European Commission, Bulgaria’s National Assembly adopted amendments to the Law on Asylum of Refugees. Unaccompanied minors will be represented by a lawyer from the register of the National Legal Aid Bureau until they are accommodated with a parent, guardian or a trustee, BNR reports.

Foreign nationals who applied for international protection will resister at the State Agency for Refugees within 3 days. If foreign nationalя  fail to present a personal document, an expertise will be performed to establish their age. If there is no clearly established age, the applicant is considered a minor. The “Safe Third Country” concept is also changed and the origin of a foreign national from such country is not a ground for rejecting the application.
