All thermal power plants (TPPs) must put infrared cameras on their stacks to monitor when they pollute the air, Bulgaria's Environment and Water Minister Emil Dimitrov told BNT. This will happen with the opening next week of a new department in the Ministry of Environment and Water, which will monitor the most hazardous plant stacks 24/7.
TPPs that exceed the permitted emission levels of carbon dioxide will pay high fines.
Dimitrov pointed out that currently there were some power plants in the country whose desulfurization facilities stop working when a certain capacity is exceeded.
