Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva is expecting sanctions to be imposed under the new mechanism for human rights on officials in Russia and oligarchs.
In an interview for Politico she says she does not expect any of the ministers to oppose sanctions on 22 February at the EU Foreign Affairs Council. The Council is also to hold a video conference meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on trans-Atlantic relations.
Minister Zaharieva adds that she was not against Josep Borrell’s trip to Russia but that it is her view that the EU should have been much clearer in its assessment of the human rights situation there.
