Environmentalists of the Za Zemiata (For the Earth) association and "Breathe, Devnya" have organized protest rallies in the cities of Sofia and Devnya, calling for cleaner air and for stopping projects for waste incineration plants. Municipal plans for building such plants exist in both cities. In Devnya such projects have already been implemented and new investment projects also exist.
In the capital city, the construction of a facility that will produce heat and electricity by burning RDF fuel from municipal waste is expected to start in the summer. A tender for selecting contractor for the project is currently being held.
