The Supreme Administrative Prosecutor's Office has asked the energy ministry to check whether unregulated gold mining is taking place in Bulgaria along the rivers. The state prosecution has opened a file after publications in the media on this occasion. The journalistic materials are based on signals from citizens and environmental organizations for illegal extraction with heavy equipment along the Struma River, where the content of gold in the sand and river material is the richest.

The territorial structures of the prosecutor's office in the country are also involved in the inspections, as they are expected to assign the mayors such inspections under the Mineral Resources Act.
