"Stopping vaccination with AstraZeneca will not be fatal to the vaccination in the EU, nor to the goals set by the Commission," European Commission spokesperson for Health, Food Safety and Transport Stefan de Keersmaecker said in an interview with BNR's Horizon channel.
"When we signed the contracts with vaccine developers, we were trying to build a diverse portfolio and invest in a variety of vaccines. It contains a total of 2.6 billion doses from 6 manufacturers. This was very important for us because we were not sure that the companies would be able to develop and produce the vaccines. Choosing a diverse portfolio turned out to be very important and useful. Now we really have problems with the production of AstraZeneca, but our portfolio includes vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson, etc," De Keersmaecker said.
