Bulgaria's poultry sector faces risk of mass bankruptcies

Photo: Library

Industrial poultry farming in Bulgaria is in crisis and if no urgent measures are taken, mass bankruptcies are imminent, industry representatives warn. On the one hand, the purchase prices of eggs and chicken meat are falling lower and lower, at the expense of poultry farmers' costs due to the rise in feed prices. On the other hand, poultry farmers are not included in support programs due to the Covid crisis.
In order to avoid the bankruptcies of poultry farmers, the Association of Professional Poultry Breeders has developed specific proposals in search of dialogue with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, including opening the state reserve and supporting wheat and corn for poultry, as well as a differentiated VAT rate for eggs and poultry.
