A military scientific research ship with board number 421 docked in the port of Varna. It is the new acquisition of a consortium uniting the Maritime School in Varna, the Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski” and the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute.

The main tasks of the vessel will be to facilitate the Bulgarian national Antarctic expeditions, research activities under the National Program for Polar Research, as well as research in the Black Sea and the World Ocean.

The name of the ship was chosen after a competition and it is "Sts. Cyril and Methodius ”.

Until now, the Bulgarian Antarctic expedition used to reach Livingston Island from the Chilean port of Punta Arenas on board a Spanish ship.
