At an Emergency EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Afghanistan, Bulgarian MEP Elena Yoncheva asked whether the EU will commit to the relocation of refugees from Afghanistan if the migratory pressure builds along Bulgaria’s border which is an external European Union border.

Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, pointed out that it takes unity for the EU to prove it is a geopolitical player in this situation. He added that more than 60 countries members of the UN have signed a statement that the people who want to leave Afghanistan are free to do so, and that a common policy must be drafted on the future of Afghanistan together with the US and the UK.
