10 November, 1989: The start of Bulgaria’s transition to democracy

On 10 November, 1989, one day after the fall of the Berlin wall, during the November plenum of the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party, long-standing communist leader Todor Zhivkov was relieved of the post of secretary general of the communist party.

Why free speech still remains an unfulfilled dream for Bulgarian democracy

This date is regarded as the start of the Bulgarian transition to democracy and market economy. Todor Zhivkov was brought down by Petar Mladenov, member of the Politburo, and Andrey Lukanov, candidate member of the Politburo of the Bulgarian Communist Party.
