As of 31 December, booster shots of the vaccine against Covid-19 can be administered 3 months after the second dose of a two-dose, and 2 months after a single-dose vaccine. EU digital Covid certificates under the new regulations are available via the Information Services system. As of today, people who have recovered from Covid-19 will be able to take a vaccine no earlier than 3 months after recovery instead of 6 months as previously.
“Research shows that the 3-month interval ensures a sufficiently powerful immune response, giving the individual with a booster dose a maximum level of protection over a comparatively short space of time. The concrete reason for the decision is the Omicron variant which spreads very quickly and is transmitted very easily,” Chief State Health Inspector Assoc. Prof. Angel Kunchev said.
For the time being a third dose is only envisaged for adults, and not for children aged 5 to 11.
